How is a Reading Done?
Automated vs. Soulful

Unlike others, this web site does not offer automated I Ching readings generated by a computer in response to a mere click of the mouse. Such a trivialized approach offered elsewhere is not a true reading of the I Ching, and is antithetical to the traditional soulful method practiced here.

In the automated method, since only a small part of the applicable text is typically displayed, the "answer" is superficial, lacking the in-depth food for thought which characterizes a true I Ching reading.

An automated reading cultivates an expectation for instant gratification, where just the opposite state of mind is required. This not only dampens the seeker's own energy flow, but also demonstrates disrespect for the Sage. Therefore, the "answer" provided by an automated reading is untrustworthy.

Spirit can be expected to express about you through you, a living soul, better than through a soulless machine, can it not? So the method employed here does not rely on computer-generated results. The computer in this case is only a medium of communication between you and another real living soul.

Andrew also offers free interpretation of the I Ching's answer, and support based on life experience, values which no automated process can begin to offer.

Frame of Mind

As you begin to do a reading, your frame of mind is most important. You don't have to believe, but you have to be open to the possibilities in order to get a meaningful answer, since doubt dampens the flow of energy. The Bible doesn't change it's answer if you treat it disrespectfully, but the I Ching does. So in order to get a pertinent and helpful answer, you need to approach the book with due respect.

You don't have to be a monk, but you do have to be ready and willing to center yourself at least a little. The more you can center yourself and empty your mind of busy thoughts, the more successful you will be at finding the answers you're looking for. If you don't know how to center yourself, ask for coaching right at the start, that is, when you first get in contact with Andrew via private chat.

Coins Method

The Taijitu & Bagua
In order to do a reading together, you will need to have on hand three coins of the same kind. It doesn't matter what kind of coin, as long as they are three of a kind, and you can identify heads and tails.

The I Ching is consulted by focusing on a question while casting the coins and observing the result. The coin toss yields either Yin or Yang, representing the duality in all things. Andrew will coach you through casting the coins yourself, to give every opportunity for Spirit to express about you through you.

When casting the coins, cup all three coins together in both hands, then shake them. It may help to do this while straightening the back, lifting the elbows, and breathing consciously. Keep shaking the coins, while thinking only of the question. When the time feels right, drop them all at once and read how many heads. If a coin falls in an unexpected place, like off the table onto the floor, it's OK--just read it wherever it may land.

Two trigrams forming a hexagram are drawn from the coin results. There are eight possible trigrams, representing the elements of nature, and 64 possible hexagrams representing the conditions of life. Each casting of the coins results in a different hexagram or pair of them.

Each hexagram is written about in detail in the ancient book. The appropriate portion of text is consulted and considered carefully in the context of the question asked. (Your detailed personalized results will include two different translations of the ancient book.) This sometimes suggests a direct answer, and always gives food for thought.

The I Ching anticipates and offers advice for success in adapting to all 64 conditions. While a mind conditioned by the popular western culture may cling to irrational denial of some conditions and pursuit of others, as though we could exercise absolute control over them, the I Ching presupposes that we can have better success by being aware of and adapting to all the conditions that influence us, reveals which ones apply to the question asked, and invites us to embrace a balance between Yin and Yang in all things.
